ABOUT ALTAI BLUE HORIZON

HI, WE’RE ALTAI BLUE HORIZON!

We are a community-driven NGO committed to improving education and providing essential resources for children in Western Mongolia. Our work focuses on public schools and rural communities, ensuring that quality education is accessible to all—regardless of location or socio-economic background.

OUR STORY

A FRIENDSHIP THAT SPARKED CHANGE

In 2023, Rafael volunteered as a teacher in Bayan-Ulgii for five months. There, he met Baibolat, a dedicated local NGO worker. Through conversations, Baibolat shared the challenges faced by children in remote villages and nomadic communities, especially the lack of access to quality education.

Recognising the urgent need for better educational opportunities in Western Mongolia, Rafael and Baibolat became close friends and decided to take action.

FROM A ONE-TIME PROJECT TO A LASTING TRADITION

In 2024, Rafael and Baibolat launched a free summer programme for local children. With the support of over 10 volunteers from Geneva and Bayan-Ölgii, they organised English and Mongolian classes, sports, and arts workshops in three public schools.

The programme reached more than 180 students, creating a lasting impact and proving how much could be achieved through collaboration, dedication, and community engagement.

THE BIRTH OF ALTAI BLUE HORIZON

Inspired by the programme’s success, the team decided to establish Altai Blue Horizon as an NGO to continue and expand their mission. With offices in Geneva and Bayan-Ölgii, the Swiss-Mongolian team is committed to creating sustainable, long-term educational opportunities in underserved communities.

Today, the team is preparing the next summer programme and developing a teacher exchange initiative to strengthen education in Western Mongolia for future generations.

WHAT DRIVES US

At Altai Blue Horizon, our work is guided by a clear mission, inspired by a bold vision, and rooted in strong core values. These principles shape our commitment to creating a better future through education in Western Mongolia.

OUR MISSION

To provide free and inclusive education for children in Western Mongolia, ensuring that no child is left behind, regardless of their background or circumstances.

OUR VISION

A future where every child in Western Mongolia has access to quality education and equal opportunities, empowering them to shape their own futures.

OUR VALUES

  • Socio-economic equality – Education should be accessible to all, regardless of financial background.
  • Community collaboration – Local partnerships and teamwork drive real impact.
  • Empowerment through education – Knowledge is the key to opportunity.
  • Inclusivity and diversity – Every child deserves a learning environment that respects their identity.
  • Transparency – We operate with honesty and accountability in everything we do.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

  • We focus on underserved areas – Our work prioritises public schools and rural communities, where educational resources are most needed.
  • We combine local expertise with international support – Our team consists of Mongolian and Kazakh professionals alongside volunteers from Switzerland and beyond.
  • We ensure education is truly accessible – All our programmes, resources, and volunteer initiatives are completely free, breaking down financial barriers.

WHY WESTERN MONGOLIA?

Western Mongolia is one of the most remote and underserved regions in the country. The area faces multiple challenges, including:

  • Limited infrastructure – Few paved roads and unreliable transport options.
  • Gaps in essential services – Inconsistent access to clean water, electricity, and healthcare.
  • Scarce educational resources – Schools lack teachers, materials, and funding, with most government and NGO support focused on Ulaanbaatar and central provinces.

This is why Altai Blue Horizon is dedicated to supporting children in Bayan-Ulgii, with plans to expand to Uvs and Khovd.

MEET OUR TEAM

Our team consists of passionate volunteers and education advocates who bring a diverse range of skills and experiences to our mission.
