OUR VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME
Altai Blue Horizon offers two volunteering opportunities in Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia, open to both international and Mongolian participants. Whether you want to join our four-week Summer Programme or teach at one of our partner schools, we’ll help you create a meaningful and rewarding experience.

- Choose between a four-week Summer Programme or teaching for one or two semesters at a partner school.
- Stay with a local host family for free and enjoy authentic Kazakh-Mongolian hospitality.
- Make a tangible impact by teaching, planning activities, or mentoring students.
- You only need to cover your travel expenses to Bayan-Ulgii and visa fees.
- Our Swiss-Mongolian NGO team will support you in the preparation phase and on site in Bayan-Ulgii.
SUMMER PROGRAMME

Our Summer Programme runs from 9th June to 9th July, lasting for four full weeks and ending just before the national Naadam festivities. Volunteers have the chance to inspire and engage with children and youth in one of our partner schools.
- Lead diverse activities, including language lessons, arts and crafts, and sports.
- Collaborate with a team of NGO members, local teachers, and fellow volunteers to create impactful learning experiences.
- Immerse yourself in the culture of Western Mongolia while making a difference in young lives.
TEACHER EXCHANGE

Join our Teacher Exchange Progrmme and contribute to education in Bayan-Ulgii, whether in the town centre or a rural village.
- The autumn semester runs from 1st September until Christmas, and the spring semester runs from 1st February until the end of May.
- Teach English or Mongolian to improve students’ language skills.
- Become an integral part of the school community and gain invaluable cultural insights.
- Enjoy the unique experience of living with a local family and participating in everyday life.

- Comprehensive Orientation: We provide a detailed orientation session to familiarise you with the local culture, your role, and the programme schedule.
- Teaching and Activity Resources: Access to teaching materials and activity guides to help you lead classes or workshops confidently.
- Ongoing Guidance: Our NGO team and local partners are always available to assist you with any challenges or questions.
- Accommodation and Meals: Free accommodation with a local host family and daily meals ensure you have a comfortable stay.
- Emergency Support: We provide a dedicated point of contact for assistance during your volunteering period.

FREQENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is there an age requirement to volunteer?
Yes, internationals volunteers must be at least 18 years old (Mongolian Citizens 15 with parents consent). We welcome young adults and retired professionals alike, as everyone brings valuable perspectives to our programmes.
Do I need previous teaching experience to volunteer?
No, prior teaching experience isn’t required. You can lead workshops, sports classes, or language lessons based on your background. Experience with youth organisations, like Scouts, is a bonus.
Are there costs associated with volunteering?
Volunteering is free! However, you are responsible for your travel expenses. Accommodation and meals are provided at no cost to ensure your comfort during your stay.
Will I receive a certificate or reference after volunteering?
Absolutely! Upon completing your programme, you’ll receive a work certificate, a valuable addition to your CV or personal portfolio.
Do I need to speak Mongolian or Kazakh to volunteer?
No, knowledge of Mongolian or Kazakh is not required. English is commonly used in our programmes, and you’ll have support from local staff and translators. However, learning a few basic phrases in the local languages is always appreciated and can help you connect more deeply with the community.
