HOW TO APPLY

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

We welcome both foreign and Mongolian volunteers to contribute to our mission. Below are the requirements for participation:

FOR FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS

  • Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Language Proficiency: A C1 level in English (no official certificate required). Knowledge of Kazakh or Mongolian is a bonus to enhance your experience.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Approach local traditions, languages, and customs with respect and open-mindedness.
  • Adaptability to Rural Living: Be comfortable with remote living conditions, which may include limited access to internet, hot water, or modern conveniences.

FOR MONGOLIAN VOLUNTEERS

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old (or 15 years old with parental consent).
  • Language Proficiency: Native-level Mongolian is required. English fluency is highly welcome but not mandatory.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Foster inclusivity and understanding toward national minorities and ethnic groups in the region.
  • Adaptability to Rural Living: Be comfortable with remote living conditions, which may include limited access to internet, hot water, or modern conveniences.

FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS

  • Time Commitment: Volunteers must commit to the full length of the chosen programme, typically four weeks for the Summer Programme or at least a semester for the Teacher Exchange Programme.
  • Health & Resilience: Volunteers should be in good physical and mental health, as volunteering in rural Mongolia can be demanding.
  • Experience: Prior teaching, volunteering, or youth association experience is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Criminal Background Check: Required for volunteers working closely with children or vulnerable groups.
  • Health Insurance: All volunteers must have valid health and travel insurance for the duration of their stay.

  • Travel Arrangements: Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own travel, including flights, visas, and transport to the programme site.
  • Legal Compliance: Volunteers must ensure they meet all visa and legal requirements for Mongolia.
  • Respect & Conduct: Volunteers are expected to behave respectfully and responsibly towards local communities, volunteers, and staff.
  • Health Insurance: Health or travel insurance is mandatory and must cover the entire duration of your stay.
  • Financial Responsibility: While we provide free accommodation, meals, and local transport, volunteers must cover personal expenses such as travel costs and visa fees.

STEP 1

COMPLETE THE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

  • Share your personal details, preferred volunteer programme, and your availability.
  • Ensure the information is accurate to help us match you with the most suitable programme.

STEP 2

ATTATCH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

  • Cover Letter: Submit a one-page letter (A4) outlining your motivation, skills, and goals for volunteering.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Provide a concise, one-page CV highlighting your relevant experience, education, and skills.

STEP 3

INITIAL INTERVIEW

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a virtual or in-person interview.
  • This is your opportunity to ask questions, discuss your interests, and learn more about the programme.

STEP 4

ACCEPTANCE & INTERVIEW

  • Successful applicants will receive an acceptance email with detailed information about their volunteer placement.
  • You’ll be invited to an orientation session, either in Switzerland or Mongolia, to prepare for the programme.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We welcome both foreign and Mongolian volunteers. Foreign applicants must be at least 18 years old and proficient in English (C1 level or higher). Mongolian volunteers can apply from the age of 15 with parental consent, and native-level Mongolian is required.

We accept applications year-round. However, submitting your application early gives you a better chance of securing your preferred placement and programme dates.

You’ll need to submit:

  • A one-page cover letter explaining your motivation and goals for volunteering.
  • A one-page CV highlighting any relevant skills or experience.

Once you submit your application:

  1. Our team will review your form and documents.
  2. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview to discuss their goals and ensure a good fit.
  3. If accepted, you’ll receive all the necessary details and an invitation to an orientation session.

While we don’t arrange travel or visa applications, we’re happy to provide guidance, recommendations, and any necessary documentation to support your visa process.

Volunteers must commit to the full length of their chosen programme. Most placements last one month, but specific durations depend on the programme selected.

Altai Blue Horizon provides free accommodation with host families, meals, and local transport. However, you’ll need to cover your travel, visa fees, health insurance, and personal expenses.
